Lessons Policy

Learning to play an instrument is fun and motivating especially when you can continually see improvement.  It is my hope that as a teacher, I can help contribute toward my students’ ongoing growth as musicians and learners. This policy is designed with the student’s best interest in mind.

Goals:
Both the teacher and student need to have a common set of goals to work toward.  The goals listed below are designed to help students make progress and to enjoy their instruments and get the most out receiving lessons.

Students will make progress in the following areas: reading music, keeping time, playing with others, memorization, performance, intonation, tone, technique and styles.

Students will develop a repertoire of music that they have “mastered” and can easily play at any point in time.  This gives students a base of songs that they can enjoy, play for others and build upon while learning more personally challenging pieces.

Students (and their parents) will exhibit an appropriate level of commitment.  This includes regular attendance at lessons and any other ensemble or performance opportunity, and practicing.  Practicing should be as close to daily as possible. (One good rule of thumb is: the student’s age x 3 = minutes to practice each day, or a half hour a day.)

Individualized instruction:
While I have a comprehensive approach to teaching music that follows a method, student input is welcomed.  It is important to follow the steps toward making a logical progression in one’s playing, but I’m also interested to know if the student wants to work on different music, styles or aspects of playing. Within reason, I am happy to adjust my method to fit the student’s interests.

Payment:
Payment is to be made at the beginning of each month for all lessons times in that month.  If a lesson is to be missed, there will not be a refund for the missed lesson, however, if possible, a make-up lesson may be scheduled for some time within that week.

I am excited to pass along a skill that has enriched my life in many ways, and I hope that my students can enjoy the same benefits that playing music has brought to me!
